About the Genre
Science Fiction is a type of fiction that is based off core scientific concepts. The setting can either take place on earth or an alternative world. Authors of this genre are constantly asking the question "what if?". Utopian or dystopian novels are common when exploring the world we as humans do not experience. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was the first major work of the genre and started a phenomenon. H.G. Wells was the first to actually open the flood gates for other novels. He used topics like dystopian societies and scientific discoveries to create hype. World War I sparked a new variety of topics such as war.

Authors of science fiction focus more on a universal meaning than the actual characters in the novel. This goal is partly achieved through the setting of the novel. The setting takes place outside outside of every day reality. This setting allows the presentation of new, challenging ideas presented to the characters.
